Commencing: A Night of Jane Shepard Shorts
Ethikos Productions Presents: "COMMENCING: A Night of Jane Shepard Shorts" is an all-female cast and crew production of 3 short plays by award-winning playwright Jane Shepard.
The three selections, Nine, Commencing, and Friends of the Deceased, are from Shepard's KickAss Plays for Women. Each short play is a two-hander in which both of the characters are female. Edgy, original, and with a darkly comic humanity, each play examines in very different ways the tender, funny, often tortuous quest for meaning.
We are proud to be bringing the play to you from the storied Gene Frankel Theatre this September 21st - October 8th.

We got to speak to Jane and she had this to say: "I had no inkling [;;;...];;; that presenting women as people was profoundly, silently subversive. Six years after I left New York, stumbling away broke, malnourished and wondering who the hell I was. And perhaps it's ironic that the common theme in COMMENCING's three short plays is the search for identity. A process none of us are spared. Spurred by adversity or simply by the changes of life, we scrabble for sense of self, and evolve. I am still a playwright. And I hear that the theater scene is changing. That New York is slowly opening its doors to new perspectives. That is a welcome evolution. Let us commence."
